Chuppah...Take the Poll...Let me know

Dick Day: NOT FOR YOUNG EYES!!!

Today was Dick Day...no this has nothing to do with genitalia but rather it is a rivalry sports day between the Royal Dick Veterinary School in Edinburgh and the Glasgow Veterinary School. I just thought I would share a lovely cheer that I learned today from fellow Glasgow students.

(sung to the tune of "she will be coming around the mountain when she comes")

If you want to go to heaven when you die
You have to wear a Glasgow shirt and Glasgow tie
You will have to wear a bonnet
With F*** the Dicks right on it
If you want to go to heaven when you die

F*** the Dicks!

Oh...I'd rather shag a Camel then a Dick
I'd rather shag a camel then a Dick
I'd rather shag a camel or any other mammal
I'd rather shag a camel than a Dick

F*** the Dicks

Oh...I'd rather be a fanny than a Dick
I'd rather be a fanny than a Dick
I'd rather be a fanny dryer than your Grannies
I'd rather be a fanny than a Dick

F*** the Dicks!!!!!

The song goes on for many more versus...these are the more PC ones. Just imagine singing this at a football (soccer) match. How would you like that Amanda?;)

Grotesque....yes....funny....very

Hodge Podge of Closely Related Events

I took part in a very fun lab the other day; We practiced nerve blocks on legs of deceased horses. It was good fun and I hit all my marks:) As did most people in my group. We are just ACE here in Glasgow:) We are now learning about HORSES!!!!! ya hoo! Thank godess we are learning about something new. Not to mention something I like.

On a more unfortunate note I have a terrible cold that just won't go away. After the joyous horse leg lab last Thursday I returned home feeling like crap. That night instead of dreaming of nerve blocks I dreamed of rivers of snot. This of course woke me up several times during the night only to discover that I was indeed drowning in a river of snot. It has since moved into my chest and back up to my nose. Cross your fingers it will leave me soon.

Stay tuned for wedding plans...Tyler and I are at least starting to figure out what we want in our ceremony and such. We are going to do a traditional Jewish wedding + or - some of the traditional. For example, there is a much excluded tradition of greeting the bride and groom before the wedding. Men greet the groom in one place and women greet the bride in another. We both agree this would be a great addition to the wedding especially because we are going to keep the tradition of Yihud after the wedding (which kind of cancels out the receiving line). This is a tradition where the bride and groom spend their first 15 minutes in a room alone together. They eat, drink (they are technically supose to have fasted all day) and relax and enjoy their first few minutes of marriage together:) There is more but I will save some for later...by the way here is an excerpt from the "guide to jewish wedding online" that I think we should all catalogue for later use....

"It is a mitzvah (divine commandment) for guests to bring simchah (joy) to the [groom] and the [bride] on their wedding day. There is much music and dancing as the guests celebrate with the new couple. To further bring joy to the occasion, some guests perform feats of juggling and acrobatics."

ok...no acrobatics required but juggling......hmmmm negotiable

Oh Boy!!

I received my first application for an externship (a short internship) today!!! I am very excited. It is for Rood and Riddle in Kentucky. They are an excellent hospital and I hope I get to visit. They are one of the best and it would be a privilege to view their operation and have the chance to learn from the best. I just have to answer two more questions

What are my expectaions from visiting Rood and Riddle?
Well obviously to learn but man....i have to make it elegant.....If only I have D's writing skills. Why didn't you sit next to me in high school English...I could have "learned" off of you in that class too;)

What are my dates?
Ummm....we have no term dates for next year so......guess I should put anything down. Maybe July, should be nice and sticky around that time. Not many people will be applying then, right? It is summer though, no school. Plus I am sure they have people year round. Oh and how many weeks should I do? 1,2,3,4???? I think 3...end of July begining of August. There are 3 of their rotations I would love to do...Surgery, Medicine and Podiatry. Thats right, Podiatry:)

So what do you think?

Happy Guy Fawkes Day!!!

Guy Fawkes Day Poem

Traditional British

Remember, remember, the 5th of November
The Gunpowder Treason and plot ;
I know of no reason why Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot.

Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes,
'Twas his intent.
To blow up the King and the Parliament.
Three score barrels of powder below.
Poor old England to overthrow.
By God's providence he was catch'd,
With a dark lantern and burning match

Holloa boys, Holloa boys, let the bells ring
Holloa boys, Holloa boys, God save the King!

Hip hip Hoorah !
Hip hip Hoorah !

A penny loaf to feed ol'Pope,
A farthing cheese to choke him.
A pint of beer to rinse it down,
A faggot of sticks to burn him.
Burn him in a tub of tar,'
Burn him like a blazing star.
Burn his body from his head,
Then we'll say: ol'Pope is dead.

Tonight we spent many hours eating chili, socialising and light off fireworks in the street. There were only a few rouge fireworks and one call to the police. Go light a bonfire and some fireworks and have your own Guy Fawkes celebration tonight!!!

yay halloween...

Happy Halloween!!!! Hope everyone has an evening of fun, mischief and (for some) debauchery (Mom no debauchery for you). Tyler and I will be heading out with friends to the opening of James Bond and then to a party at the vet school. The theme for dressing up is suppose to be super heroes but we sort of skewed outside the lines on that one. I am a biker chick and Tyler is a bathroom wall (complete with TP).

Not feeling that excited about the weeks to come or life in general so I think I will keep this short. Probably just a caffeine low... I'll perk up in the morning after a cup o' joe.

Call me Eeyore..."Oh bother."

Here Fishy Fishy!

We went fishing at a beautiful lake
It rained all day for goodness sake
Our toes were froze our hands were numb
but we weren't leaving till the day was done
The sun broke through near four o'clock
yes of course it was just our luck
our day was done just at five
all the fish they did survive
Not one fish would take the hook
Not one fish did we cook :(

Bummer...but a good day none the less:)

The Week and Weeks to Come

Sorry for the lack of writing. For some reason the last week flew at painful pace that seemed endless. I know that is contradictory but I can't help that, it is just how it felt. This hole term seems to be flying by...here is a week in the life just for kicks...

Sunday: or as I like to call it Funday...yoga with friends, so painful that I can't move all week

Monday: 9-1 sit through lectures both companion and farm animal
2:30-5- practical. Last week I learned how to do a thoracocentesis (sticking a needle in the chest of a dog to remove air or fluid in an emergency situation...no animals were harmed during the week; we used dummies.)
Gym but still ca
n't move from Yoga
Study if you can
Tuesday:
11:30-5 Lectures ... on farm aniamls and bovine
slaughter, study

Wednesday: 9-12 (1/2 day, Sprots day for the university) Lectures....farm animal...bovine reproduction last week
7:30 swing dancing then study

Thursday:
9-1 lectures...last week; herd fertility, hernias and ruptures, cardiology practical on reading ECGs (very fun). Tristin's B-day dinner. Study

Friday: 9-3:30 Lectures, 2-4:30 practical last week was cardiology. We learned to diagnose arrhythmias of the heart

Saturday: Library study time then last weekend a wedding reception for Catherine and Kenny

So looking at my diary for the upcoming weeks it looks very interesting...let me tell you the subjects I will be studying. It starts of standard...ovohistarecomy lectures, castration lectures, learning how to gown and glove practical. Then lectures get interesting....regurgitaion, vomiting, abortion, vomiting again, gastric dilation and volvulous (twisting), constipation, and small animal diarrhoea. Sounds like a messy week to me. The good news is my first equine lecture will be on the 5th of November (also known as Guy Fawkes Day) so I am looking forward to that.

For those of you interested in my progression of wedding plans...don't be....there are none except for the occational thought of a venue. My mom and sister have done more planing than me. Hopefully this weekend I will have something to report.

Peace out

P.S. Go TREE!! hope the downhill race was fun, and you won!!!

Ya Hoo and Yee Haw

I went horse riding today!!!! Yay!! It had been a very long time.

The reason I went riding is because Tristin and I decided to try out for the Vet School's riding team. It only lasted 10 minutes but it was great. I wasn't even that rusty:)

I am sorry to say we didn't make the team but we sort of knew it when we showed up. The girls were not all that interested in watching us ride, but got on and popped over some jumps anyway. It was good fun.

Other than riding I am just studying bovine field surgery, animal slaughter and transport, nothing new in this neck of the woods. Hopefully this weekend we will make it out to the West Brewery's Bavarian Oktoberfest, listen to a German Oompah band and drink beer by the liter.

Pie and Icecream

So Tyler can't believe that I have only had 3-4 different types of pie (as in desert) in my life. Technically tonight I added my fifth type of pie, peach. Apparently there are all types of pie for example...

the classics: apple, peach, raspberry, blueberry, strawberry, triple berry, cherry pecan, pumpkin, lemon meringue, key lime, chocolate etc...
the more rare: grape, raisin, rhubarb, elderberry, huckleberry, sweet potato pie, etc...
Ice cream pies: Tyler says they don't count because they are not baked so do not include these.

Please take my poll (to the left) and let me know how many different types of pie you have had. Hopefully I can tell Tyler I am not alone.

Salsa please...hold the chips!

Just got back from a very fun night of salsa dancing with friends. Tyler and I had a blast! He is finally motivated to learn some partner dancing so next time you see us we might just be cutting a rug. The best part of the evening happened after midnight, the club turned into a seventies night club:) Super fun! So if anyone comes to visit remind me to take you to the buff club on a Saturday night for Salsa and Seventies!

Night Night it is 2 am:)

Again with India

Here is the link to the hospital/shelter I would be working at if anyone is interested. Some of the stories are great. I guess I can always go there after I become a vet...but I live on this side of the world already so....hmmmmm

To India or not to India

So one of my friends asked me if I would like to go to India with her to do veterinary work for spring break. It is a basically a giant free spay and neuter clinic that veterinary students can participate in for clinical experience (we of course pay our way out there). I have participated in one in the US as many of you know...in North Dakota...yes, that is what I was doing there. No, I wasn't hanging out in Fargo.

Anyway, I am thinking of going. I mean how often do you see India, and I get to give back to the world.

The only problem is that Equine work (my future specialty) is very big during the spring and I was hoping to visit a hospital or two and gain more experience. This of course can always be done in summer....just not as many problems to encounter (spring is birthing season, lots of problems can occur).

On the other hand India has surgery (my other love) and I hear you get to see and DO A LOT of it:)

So....what do you think?....give me feedback

(Mom- we would have to discuss how I would get to India. Did I mention I love you, alot:)

A new start

Hello! I have decided to start over. New school year new blog...hopefully more writing.

So far so good. Classes started Monday with a lesson in herd management and diarrhea. Fascinating. Actually it was, but I think you have to be into that sort of thing to appreciate it. Tomorrow has in store more diarrhea with a dose of anesthesia management on Thursday:)

Last week Tyler and I sent summer out with a bang and traveled (some of) the highlands of Scotland. Very fun and informative. We visited Fort William, Fort Augustus, Loch Ness and Inverness. There were lots of castles and battlefields along the way but no sign of Nessie....well no real sign of Nessie. I even got to see the Jacobite Steam Engine (the Harry Potter Train) make its way across the Glenfinnan Via duct:) If anyone gets the chance I highly recommend the highlands as a place to see...lots of mountains and tons of hiking:)

More later....Janet
